This study aims to provide an overview of future research directions related to PFAS by reviewing domestic and international regulatory trends and summarizing PFAS occurrence in food groups and analytical methods. Regulatory trends in major developed and Asian countries were investigated, along with PFAS occurrence in highly exposed food groups and food contact materials. In addition, extraction and purification methods for different sample matrices and factors affecting measured PFAS concentrations, including storage conditions, were reviewed. The results showed that PFAS regulations are being strengthened worldwide to reduce human exposure, particularly regarding the management of water and food. PFAS contamination levels vary depending on environmental conditions, food types, and processing methods, and food contact materials were also identified as major exposure sources. In terms of analytical techniques, various extraction and purification methods have been applied depending on matrix characteristics, and methods combining QuEChERS-based pretreatment with solid-phase extraction (SPE) cleanup demonstrated high analytical efficiency and recovery. Current regulations mainly focus on PFAS compounds with established toxicity, highlighting the need for further toxicological and risk assessment studies on non-regulated PFAS compounds. In addition, because analytical results may vary depending on extraction and purification procedures even for identical samples, further studies are needed to establish standardized analytical methods for PFAS analysis.

(Enviliance Asia, 2026).
